Dutch Flooding Institute

The Netherlands has historically been a maritime nation. During the last five hundred years its economy and culture has grown thanks to its connections by sea. This is situation becomes architecture on Amsterdam, the biggest and busiest city in the country, where water control has been mastered using canals. On the 21st century climate change has made the rise of sea level and consequent floods a worldwide issue. The Netherlands has mastered water control for centuries, having the opportunity to now become a world reference in flood related issues.

The Dutch Flooding Institute is the organisation in charge of leading the fight against uncontrolled floods. The building hosting the institute is designed using water as the generator of space and form. Water alters is an active participant dependent on the weather.

When it rains water is collected from the roof and allowed to flow from top to bottom. In this journey, water disrupts the users experience in order to create awareness on floods and the power of water
